Water damage

9/26/2024 (Permalink)

Water damage is categorized into four classes based on the source and contamination level of the water:

Category 1: Clean Water

- Originates from a sanitary source- pipes, appliances, rain
- No contaminants present
- Minimal health risk

Category 2: Gray Water

- Contains significant contamination-, dishwasher, washing machine, toilet overflow
- May contain bacteria, viruses, or other microorganisms
- Potential health risk

Category 3: Black Water

- Grossly contaminated-sewage, floodwater, seawater
- Contains harmful pathogens, bacteria, and viruses
- Significant health risk

Category 4: Specialized or Hazardous Water

- Involves unique contaminants requiring specialized removal procedures- chemicals, heavy metals, biological agents
- Requires specialized equipment and trained professionals
- High health risk

Understanding these categories helps SERVPRO® determine the severity of water damage and necessary remediation procedures to ensure safe and effective restoration. Proper categorization ensures the water damage is handled efficiently and effectively to prevent further damage and health risks.
